Even with the passing of COVID, online education will remain at the forefront of attention.  Many students lose out on opportunities to network and collaborate academically while taking online classes, resulting in mental health issues and increased likelihood of dropping out.  Even for in-person classes not all students get the opportunity to collaborate and the efficacy of the collaboration greatly depends on the group and resources tied to it. It is an issue that disproportionately affects minority students and is partly responsible for underrepresentation in STEM education.  Decades of research have shown the efficacy of study groups in improving retention rates, and is a powerful solution to tackling student retention when implemented properly.  However, organizing study groups is often a logistical nightmare for large classrooms and cannot be done at a large scale without software.
