What Problem We are Solving

Problem
In emerging global markets, 1.6 billion people need cost-effective shelter. However, most of these people cannot get or afford an effective roof over their head. Available roofing materials are loud, fragile, flimsy, hot, and can contain asbestos, a known carcinogen. In the US and other developed markets, the global focus on climate change is propelling the adoption of more low-carbon products at all levels.

About Us

About Us
Eco-Shelter Inc. develops, manufactures and sells ultra-low carbon, affordable, roofing and building products. We start with the needs of consumers in emerging markets (1.6 billion people) and develop these as desirable building products globally.

Venture Highlights

Highlights
Eco-Shelter has validated the market for its product with the government of India, the US government who granted $1.2M for development, housing organizations and leading green building material suppliers. Eco-Shelter has received 8 Letters of Intent and has established early distribution partnerships in India and the US, expected to generate $1M+ of early revenue once in commercial production.

The Eco-Shelter team has spent the last 5 years in R&D, developing a bamboo-composite building material to meet the highest international codes and standards. It has achieved all of this through bootstrapping, a committed team, non-dilutive funding, and collaboration with organizations including the Gates Foundation, top entrepreneurial advisors and collaborators. The company is ready to go-to market. It is seeking $2.5M seed capital to set up manufacturing and distribution and to build out its global team to capitalize on the already significant demand for its revolutionary products.

Business Model

Business Model
Eco-Shelter's proprietary technology shifts unit economics away from traditional building material industry standards.  Based on press capacity, it yields a fast cash conversion with 53 percent gross margin and 23 percent net margin in emerging markets like India and an impressive 88 percent gross margin in developed countries like the US. The unique nature of Eco-Shelter’s unit economics is that each press, with a capital cost of $200,000 and annual operating cost of $325,000, can produce over 75,000 sheets of material at more than $4.5 million revenue and over $1 million in gross profit. The growth of press capacity with product scale, will continue to improve the economics.

Go-To Market Strategy

Business Strategy
Our Go-To-Market strategy in India and the US is to sell through channel partners and building material distributors. In India, we have seen strong market validation from end-users and conducted dozens of interviews with building material retailers and distributors. One distributor which has shown interest has capacity to distribute over 500 tons of material, an estimated $800,000 of gross revenue. There are thousands of similar distributors and traders within India.

In the US, architects play a critical role in early market adoption specifying the product in building designs. Eco-Shelter has secured LOIs from the City of Tacoma, Ferguson Architects, and Green Home Solutions as early Go-To-Market partners in the Pacific Northwest. Ferguson Architects has committed to specify the product in 5 unique building designs once proof-of-concept installations are complete and ASTM certification is complete. Residential projects are expected to generate approximately $20,000 in product sales and commercial projects, $400,000. Eco-Shelter will continue to build strategic partnerships with architects to specify the product in building designs and Greenhome Solutions (Seattle) has committed to being a distribution partner.

Competitive Analysis

Competitive Analysys
A primary competitor particularly in India, is asbestos/fiber cement roofing sheets. While asbestos has been banned in 55 countries due to decades of research confirming its carcinogenicity, it is still widely used today in India and other South Asian countries. While the material is very cheap, it performs poorly. It breaks, cracks and leaks and absorbs heat. Metal corrugated materials are flimsy, noisy, and offer little insulation and strength.

In the US, companies with rainscreen cladding product lines and a sustainability focus include Kebony, RichLite, and PaperStone. These companies sell rainscreen products at the green building specialty retailers which Eco-Shelter Inc. plans to sell and products retail for $10-20/sq ft. In the US, Hardie Plank is the most pervasive product in the market and while the product is relatively cheap at $4-5/sq ft the product is difficult to work with and installed cost lands around $8-10/sq ft.
