Description

First Flight Venture Center is a non-profit science and technology incubator based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina that helps founders of science-based startups accelerate development and commercialization. Through a suite of programs spanning pre-accelerator, accelerator, mentoring, prototype support, pitch practice, and grant funding readiness, First Flight provides the infrastructure, coaching, and community needed to advance early stage technology ventures. 

Eligibility

Early-stage science and technology companies and founders (e.g., biotech, medtech, deep tech).
• Companies capable of engaging in business development, prototype/APIs, grant strategy, and commercialization planning.
• Programs like FAST target women-owned, rural, and socially/economically disadvantaged firms to increase SBIR/STTR success.
• Founders interested in grant funding education, pitch development, and peer networking across early stages.

Process

Inquiry & Membership: Entrepreneurs contact First Flight to explore incubator membership, program fit, or space needs

Program Matching: Founders work with staff to identify appropriate offerings — Propeller, WheelsUP Accelerator, LiftOff (grant support), or FAST SBIR/STTR support

Engagement & Execution: Participants engage in cohort workshops, mentoring, pitch practice, and milestone activities

Grant & Funding Support: Programs like LiftOff and FAST help prepare competitive non-dilutive grant proposals (SBIR/STTR) and connect founders with external funding pathways. 

Ongoing Support: Startup members receive navigators (advisors), peer networking, and specialized events to build investor readiness and commercialization traction.
