Northern Michigan Angels (NMA) is a member-driven angel investment organization based in Traverse City, Michigan, made up of accredited investors and local business leaders focused on deploying capital to high-growth early-stage companies that can positively impact the economic base and quality of life in Northern Michigan and the broader Great Lakes region.
Pre-Seed / Seed: Focus on early-stage investment opportunities where angel capital can catalyze growth and business establishment.
Series A: Does not typically lead Series A rounds itself; individual members may participate in follow-on investments or co-invest with broader networks as companies progress beyond angel stage.
Investment Range: Members decide individually whether to invest, with historical group activity showing diverse deal sizes that collectively have exceeded $6M invested in 30+ companies over a decade.
Invests across sectors including technology, software, consumer products, alternative energy, business services, and certain life science areas, reflecting a broad regional investment interest.
Founders typically engage by introducing their startup to NMA through the group’s website or via member referrals; NMA evaluates for regional relevance, scalability, and leadership strength.

Eligibility

Geography: Prioritizes companies based in or meaningfully connected to Northern Michigan and the Great Lakes region, with a mission to grow the local entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Profile: Early-stage startups with viable business concepts, strong teams, and the potential for regional economic impact.
Team: Preference for committed founders with demonstrated execution capability and openness to mentorship from experienced angel members.

Process

Initial Submission & Review: Founders share executive summaries and pitch materials; the group assesses fit with NMA’s mission and regional impact goals.
 Member Presentation & Engagement: Shortlisted startups are presented to investor members, who can ask questions and evaluate strategic fit.
 Due Diligence: Interested members lead diligence on market opportunity, team execution ability, and product traction.
 Deal Structuring & Investment Decision: Individual accredited members make investment decisions independently; deals are executed deal-by-deal with terms negotiated between founders and investing angels.
