Mid-Atlantic Bio Angels (MABA) is a member-led angel investment network focused on early-stage life sciences and healthcare companies across the Mid-Atlantic region, including Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Founded in 2012, MABA brings together experienced executives, scientists, clinicians, and investors to provide capital, domain expertise, and strategic guidance to promising biotech, medtech, diagnostics, digital health, and healthcare services startups.
Pre-Seed / Seed: Primary focus on early-stage life sciences and healthcare companies.
Series A: Selective participation in early institutional rounds, often alongside regional or national VCs.
Initial investments typically range from $50K–$250K per company from the group.
Total round participation often reaches $500K–$2M+ through member syndication and co-investment partners.
Invests in companies with strong scientific validation, defensible IP, clear regulatory pathways, and experienced or coachable founding teams.
Companies typically apply through the MABA website or via referrals from members and regional ecosystem partners.
Key ecosystem presence includes pitch sessions hosted throughout the year and visibility at regional life science events such as BioHealth Capital Region forums and university-affiliated innovation showcases.
Eligibility
Geography: Companies based in or meaningfully connected to the Mid-Atlantic region are prioritized, though exceptions may be made.
Profile: Early-stage life sciences and healthcare startups (Pre-Seed, Seed, early Series A) with strong technical or clinical proof points.
Team: Preference for teams with deep scientific expertise and the ability to execute commercialization and regulatory strategy.
Process
Initial Intake & Screening: Companies submit an application and executive summary for fit with MABA’s life sciences focus and regional relevance.
Screening Committee Review: Selected companies present to a screening committee for deeper evaluation of science, market, and team.
Member Presentation: Approved companies pitch at a full MABA member meeting.
Due Diligence: Interested members conduct scientific, clinical, regulatory, and commercial diligence.
Deal Structuring & Close: Investments are made via SPVs or member syndicates on a deal-by-deal basis.
