MEDA Angels

Healthcare-focused angel group of physicians, scientists and industry executives investing in mid-seed to Series A.

Washington, DC, USA

Description

MEDA Angels is a specialized, clinician-led angel investment group headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Founded by healthcare professionals and venture veterans, the group bridges the gap between healthcare innovation and clinical reality by providing "smart capital" from investors who understand the daily workflows of medicine.
  • Seed & Series A: MEDA Angels primarily targets early-stage startups that have achieved a proof-of-concept or initial clinical validation.
  • Expansion: They selectively participate in Series B rounds for high-performing portfolio companies.
  • Method: Founders apply through the MEDA Angels portal, which utilizes the Gust platform for deal management.
  • Materials: A professional pitch deck, clinical validation data, and a clear regulatory roadmap (FDA/CE Mark status) are required.
  • Clinician Vetting: Unlike generalist angel groups, applications are reviewed by practicing physicians to assess the actual "clinical utility" of the product.

Eligibility

  • Sectors: Digital Health, Medical Devices, Diagnostics, and Health IT.
  • Geography: Primarily focused on United States-based companies, but they selectively invest in international ventures (e.g., Israel, Canada) with a clear U.S. market-entry plan.
  • Lead Investor: They prefer to co-invest with established lead investors but have the capacity to lead smaller seed rounds.

Process

  1. Clinical Screening: Initial review by a committee of healthcare professionals to determine if the product solves a real problem in the medical workflow.
  2. Pitch Day: Selected companies pitch to the full network of accredited members during monthly virtual or in-person forums.
  3. Collaborative Due Diligence: Interested members form a diligence team to conduct a 4–8 week deep-dive, focusing on IP, clinical trials, and reimbursement strategy.
  4. Syndication: Investments are typically aggregated into a single entity to simplify the founder's cap table.

What an Applicant can Obtain

  1. Strategic Capital: Funding from a network of over 100 physicians and healthcare executives.
  2. Clinical Guidance: Direct feedback on product usability and integration into hospital or clinic environments.
  3. Reimbursement Strategy: Assistance in navigating the complexities of CPT codes and insurance provider negotiations.
  4. Pilot Access: Introductions to medical systems and private practices for potential pilot studies.
