Description

Citrine Angels is a Washington, D.C.-based angel investment organization composed of over 80 women investors. It is dedicated solely to empowering female founders through early-stage investments, education, and mentorship. 
  • Early-Stage & Seed: The group focuses on venture-backable, female-founded startups at the pre-seed and seed stages.
  • Scalability: Targeted companies typically have an addressable market of at least $200 million and a projected exit within 5 to 8 years.
  • Dedicated staff: The founder and key employees work on the business full time
  • Traction: A track record of significant growth relevant to your sector (e.g. ARR of at least $300k, securing a lead investor)
  • Team: Access to the knowledge and expertise needed to take the company to the next level, which may be through employees, an advisory board, and/or a board of directors
  • Competitive advantage: A differentiated business which is difficult for competitors to copy
  • Use of proceeds: A well-defined use of proceeds which would directly drive revenue and profit growthOnline
  • Portal: Founders apply via an online form available on the Citrine Angels website.
  • Office Hours: The group holds monthly "Office Hours" on the first Wednesday of each month to answer questions from prospective entrepreneurs.
  • Criteria: Applicants must be female-founded and demonstrate a scalable business model. 

Eligibility

  • Gender: At least one founder must self-identify as a woman.
  • Sector: While industry agnostic, they show strong activity in Consumer (40%), Tech (26%), and Medical/Biotech (20%) sectors.
  • Geography: Primarily focused on the Washington, D.C. metro area and the Mid-Atlantic region. 

Process

  1. Online Application: Initial submission of business details and pitch materials.
  2. Prescreening: If a company meets the criteria, it is invited to a prescreening meeting with the Deal Flow Committee.
  3. Investor Pitch Meeting: Successful candidates present to the full membership at one of the 6–8 virtual pitch events held throughout the year.
  4. Due Diligence: Interested members collaborate on due diligence using the Dealum platform.
  5. Investment: Funding is aggregated from individual members, often using Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) to meet founder minimums. 

What an Applicant can Obtain

  • Financial Capital: Access to collaborative investments typically ranging from $50,000 to $100,000+.
  • Mentorship: Strategic guidance and feedback from experienced female executives and investors.
  • Network: Access to a diverse community of over 80 professional women in the D.C. area.
  • Impact: Support from a mission-driven group that has collectively invested approximately $2 million in over 20 startups as of late 2025.
