Description

• Seed & Series A: This is the core focus for new investments.
• Traction Required: Startups should ideally have a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and evidence of early market validation, such as pilot customers, early revenue, or significant intellectual property.
• Affiliation Requirement: At least one member of the founding or executive team must be a UVA alumnus, student, parent, or faculty member.
• Method: Founders apply through the CAV Angels application portal, which is hosted on the Dealum platform.
• Materials: A comprehensive pitch deck, executive summary, and financial projections are required.

Eligibility

• Sector: Industry-agnostic, with historical activity in SaaS, Biotech, Consumer Goods, and Fintech.
• Geography: Global. While many companies are U.S.-based, they invest in UVA-affiliated startups regardless of location.
• Company Structure: Must be a for-profit entity with high-growth potential and a clear path to exit.

Process

1. Digital Intake: Founders submit materials for initial screening by the leadership team to verify UVA affiliation and business viability.
2. Selection Committee: Promising ventures are invited to a screening call or meeting for a deep-dive interview with experienced members.
3. Member Pitch: Selected finalists present to the full network of 100+ accredited investors during quarterly pitch events (held virtually or in-person).
4. Due Diligence & Closing: Interested members form a team to conduct thorough vetting, leading to a term sheet and capital transfer.
