Description

Bellingham Angel Investors (BAI) is an angel investment group based in Bellingham, Washington. It consists of over 40 accredited investors who pool their capital and expertise to support high-growth companies, primarily in the Pacific Northwest. They prefer companies that have moved past the pure "idea" phase and possess a Minimum Viable Product (MVP), early customer validation, or initial revenue.
  • Method: Founders must apply through the BAI online portal (hosted on the GUST platform).
  • Materials Required: A complete application includes a pitch deck, an executive summary, and a detailed business plan.
  • Focus: They look for "scalable" business models with a clear competitive advantage and a defined exit strategy (e.g., acquisition or IPO) within 3–7 years.

Eligibility

  • Geography: Strong preference for companies based in Washington State and the Pacific Northwest (including British Columbia).
  • Sectors: Industry-agnostic, but with historical interests in SaaS, CleanTech, Life Sciences, and Consumer Products.
  • Capital Seek: Typically looking for companies raising between $250,000 and $1,500,000.

Process

  1. Online Submission: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
  2. Screening: The selection committee reviews submissions to identify companies that fit the group's investment thesis.
  3. Member Presentation: Selected finalists are invited to pitch to the full membership at monthly meetings.
  4. Due Diligence: If members express interest, a due diligence team is formed to conduct a deep-dive review of the technology, financials, and management team.
  5. Investment: Individual members make independent decisions to commit capital, which is typically aggregated for the company's cap table.

What an Applicant can Obtain

  • Capital: Access to a network of high-net-worth individuals and potential co-investment from other Northwest angel groups.
  • Mentorship: Direct coaching from seasoned executives who have successfully built and exited companies.
  • Syndication: BAI frequently syndicates deals with other regional groups like the Alliance of Angels in Seattle to fill larger rounds.
