BARDA DRIVe Accelerator

Fostering the growth of the global health security innovation ecosystem

Washington, DC, USA

Description

The BARDA DRIVe (Division of Research, Innovation, and Ventures) Accelerator Network is a strategic initiative by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). It is a public-private partnership designed to accelerate the development of health security solutions. It is specifically designed to move products through the "Valley of Death" between initial research and commercial viability.

  • Method: Founders do not apply to the government directly first; they engage with one of the 13 regional accelerators in the network (e.g., Texas Medical Center, University City Science Center, or SUNY).
  • Submission: Startups submit a pitch deck and a "Market Input" or "White Paper" tailored to specific BARDA areas of interest (AOI).
  • Focus: Areas include Sepsis detection, early notification of infection, and wearable sensors for health security.

Eligibility

  • Sector: Health Security, MedTech, Biotechnology, and Diagnostics.
  • Solution Alignment: Must address current DRIVe priorities (e.g., "Digital Health," "Re-imagining Respiratory Protection," or "Home-based Diagnostics").
  • Geography: Primarily United States-based companies, though international firms can occasionally participate if the solution is critical to U.S. health security.

Process

  1. Accelerator Engagement: A startup connects with a regional accelerator for vetting and mentorship.
  2. Abstract Submission: The accelerator helps the founder submit a short abstract/white paper to BARDA.
  3. In-Depth Review: If invited, the startup submits a full proposal for non-dilutive funding or the Blue Knight residency.
  4. Award: BARDA DRIVe provides funding via EZ-BAA (an expedited contracting process) or other investment vehicles.

What an Applicant can Obtain

  • Non-Dilutive Capital: Funding through EZ-BAA awards, typically up to $750,000 for initial phases.
  • Blue Knight: A joint residency program with Johnson & Johnson Innovation (JLABS) providing lab space and mentorship.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Direct access to government scientists and clinicians to guide regulatory and clinical strategy.
