Austin Technology Incubator

A global leader in deep tech commercialization solving the world’s most pressing problems

Austin, TX, USA

Description

The Austin Technology Incubator (ATI) is the deep tech incubator of The University of Texas at Austin. It operates as a continuous incubation program rather than a fixed-term accelerator, helping entrepreneurs commercialize breakthrough innovations and connect with funding sources.

  • Pre-seed to Seed Stage: ATI works with ventures that have a working prototype or a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) to validate whether customers will pay for the solution.
  • Growth: Companies typically stay in the program for one to three years to prepare for larger venture capital rounds.
  • Method: A selective, multi-stage application process that begins with a simple online form on the ATI website.
  • Requirements: Applicants must detail their technology, market opportunity, team capabilities, and how their solution aligns with ATI's focus areas.
  • Note: ATI does not sign NDAs during the application process due to the volume of ideas it receives.

Eligibility

  • Sector: Must be a deep tech solution, with focus areas including sustainability (clean energy, food & agtech, mobility, water), healthcare, and microelectronics.
  • Geography: Any company can apply, not just those affiliated with the University of Texas, but they need to be able to participate in the Austin ecosystem.
  • Product Status: Must be past the concept stage with a prototype or MVP built.

Process

  1. Online Application: Founders submit initial company details and vision.
  2. Internal Meeting: If the initial application fits the criteria, a more detailed application is requested in advance of a meeting with ATI staff.
  3. Formal Presentation: The final step before admission is a presentation to ATI staff and community experts for final selection.
  4. Incubation: Admitted companies receive customized, long-term support, mentorship, and access to the UT Austin ecosystem.

What an Applicant can Obtain

  • Resources: Access to co-working space, labs, and the extensive University of Texas research network.
  • Mentorship: Hands-on guidance from experienced entrepreneurs-in-residence and industry experts.
  • Funding Access: Direct connections to investors and help with grant applications (ATI alumni have raised over $2 billion in capital).
