Description

Founders must complete an online application to be considered for a pitch slot at one of AIF's monthly meetings. The application requires: 

  • A solid business model and growth potential.
  • A clear plan for "Use of Funds" and a reasonable valuation.
  • Proof of proprietary technology (patents are a plus). 

Eligibility

  • Geography: Primarily focuses on Connecticut-based companies, but also invests in companies throughout the United States.
  • Sectors: Strong interest in Enterprise Applications and Life Sciences sectors.
  • Traction: Open to pre-revenue companies if other factors are attractive, but look for strong management teams with sales experience and a well-defined market plan.
  • Return Potential: Seeks high growth potential, with an expected ROI of 5-7 times the investment and projected exit in 3-5 years.

Process

  1. Online Application: Founders apply through the AIF website's deal platform.
  2. Screening: A selection committee reviews applications to identify potential fits for the monthly meetings.
  3. Monthly Pitch Meeting: Selected companies present their 10-minute pitch (plus Q&A) to AIF members, typically on the second Tuesday of the month.
  4. Due Diligence: If there is sufficient investor interest, a due diligence committee is formed to conduct a thorough review of the company's financials, technology, and team.
  5. Investment: Individual members decide whether to invest their own money, providing capital and often ongoing mentorship.

What an Applicant can Obtain

  • Capital: Access to a network of over 100 accredited investors, with individual deal investments often in the $100,000–$2M range.
  • Expertise: Mentorship and strategic advice from seasoned investors who contribute their time, talent, and money.
  • Network: Connections to other investors and relevant organizations, such as Connecticut Innovations.
